Written during our latest visit in early February 2025, Crans-Montana welcomed us with excellent snow conditions that made for an unforgettable skiing experience. Nestled in the Swiss Alps, Crans-Montana lies in the Valais canton, positioned at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters (4,920 feet). The area is famous not only for its stunning snow-covered landscapes but also for its rich history as a ski resort destination since the early 1900s.

Crans-Montana was initially renowned for its therapeutic climate, attracting individuals seeking recovery from tuberculosis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The clean mountain air and stunning vistas served as a natural remedy for many, leading to the establishment of several clinics in the area. As time progressed and medical advancements transformed tuberculosis treatment, the focus shifted from recovery to recreation, paving the way for the development of Crans-Montana into a premier ski resort by the mid-20th century. The region quickly gained popularity among winter sports enthusiasts, hosting multiple FIS (Fédération Internationale de Ski) ski championships over the decades. Notable past winners of the FIS events include skiing legends such as Marc Girardelli and Lindsey Vonn, whose accomplishments have solidified Crans-Montana's reputation as a top-tier destination for competitive skiing, combining a rich historical context with exhilarating winter sports experiences.
During our stay, we chose to lodge in Montana, conveniently located just a stone's throw away from the ski lift heading up to Cry d'Err, which offers sweeping views over the region and the majestic Pennine Alps.

The skiing in Crans-Montana is truly outstanding. With wide, well-groomed pistes that are south-facing, skiers can enjoy plenty of sun exposure throughout the day, making it a pleasure to carve down the slopes. A particularly appealing aspect of the area is its suitability for intermediate skiers, with many runs that offer both challenge and ease. Tree line skiing at Crans-Montana offers a blend of breathtaking alpine scenery and varied terrain, allowing skiers to glide through a captivating landscape of snow-dusted pines and picturesque views. Moreover, we were delighted to discover some freeriding options near the top of the glacier, which provided an escape into nature's untouched powder. On a weekday, we were surprised to find the area virtually deserted, allowing us to revel in the tranquility of the mountains—this is beautifully captured in our accompanying video.

Dining while skiing can sometimes present challenges, and Crans-Montana is no exception; restaurant choices on the mountain can be limited. However, we found an extraordinary option off the slopes: a fabulous lunch experience at Six Senses Crans-Montana. The atmosphere was luxurious, and the culinary offerings were nothing short of superb—definitely a highlight of our trip. The hotel's luxurious accommodations feature a large spa and an outdoor swimming pool, providing the ultimate convenience of ski-in/ski-out access for the perfect winter getaway.
