Regent, Silversea, Seabourn, Explora, Crystal, Ponant and the expedition fleet all call themselves the best. They are built for different people. I have sailed most of them, and I will tell you which one is yours.
Ultra-luxury cruising generally means smaller ships, spacious accommodation, highly personalised service and fares that include much of what you would otherwise pay for separately. Expedition cruising adds specialist teams and purpose-built equipment: polar vessels are ice-classed, while Galápagos ships are designed for a very different environment.
What that description hides is how differently these lines behave. Two ships in the same class, on the same itinerary, at the same fare, can produce completely different holidays - one formal and hushed, the other relaxed and social; one with a wine list that runs deep, the other with a spa that runs the day. Nobody publishes that. It is the whole reason people end up on the wrong ship.

Regent often suits travellers who value maximum bundling and a more traditional style of luxury. Silversea often appeals to those prioritising itinerary depth, smaller-ship atmosphere and expedition capability. The better choice depends on the specific ship and voyage, not simply the brand. No. The fare is the same as booking direct, because the cruise line pays the advisor’s commission out of it either way. Booking direct simply means you lose the Virtuoso amenities and/ or other promotional benefits that come with it.

Earlier than most people expect. Suites in these ships number in the hundreds, not thousands, and the best categories on popular itineraries go twelve to eighteen months out. Antarctica and the Arctic go earlier still. Late availability exists but rarely in the cabin you wanted.

The ship is ice-rated, carries Zodiacs and a team of naturalists, and the itinerary is written in pencil — landings depend on ice and weather. Comfort varies enormously across the expedition fleet, far more than in ocean cruising, so the choice of ship matters more here than anywhere else in the category.
